How to find the Qibla

1

Share your location

Tap Use my location & compass and allow location access. Nothing leaves your phone — the calculation happens on this page.

2

Turn with your phone

Hold your phone flat and turn slowly. The dial rotates with you, and the gold Kaaba marker shows the direction of Makkah.

3

Line up the marker

When the gold marker reaches the gold pointer at the top, you are facing the Qibla. The ring lights up to confirm it.

Qibla direction from major cities

The Qibla angle is measured clockwise from true north and changes from place to place — that is why a direction that works in one city can be far off in another. A few examples, calculated the same way QiblaIO calculates yours:

How the direction is calculated

QiblaIO uses the great-circle method: given your latitude and longitude, it works out the initial bearing of the shortest path over the Earth's surface to the Kaaba in Makkah (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E). This is the method behind printed prayer calendars and mosque Qibla indicators worldwide, and it is more accurate than simply pointing "west" — from North America the Qibla is actually toward the northeast, and from Southeast Asia toward the northwest.

Getting an accurate reading: phone compasses drift near metal, magnets (including some phone cases), cars and electronics. If the needle behaves strangely, move your phone in a figure-8 motion a few times to calibrate it, hold it flat and away from metal, and give it a few seconds to settle. On devices without a compass sensor, QiblaIO still gives you the exact angle for your location so you can use a regular compass.

Angles are measured from true north. If you are using a physical magnetic compass, remember that magnetic north differs from true north by a few degrees depending on where you are (the local declination).

Frequently asked questions

How does QiblaIO find the Qibla direction?

QiblaIO takes your location and calculates the great-circle bearing to the Kaaba in Makkah (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E) — the same method used by prayer-time calendars. The gold marker on the compass shows that direction, and the live compass rotates as you turn your phone.

What is the Qibla direction from Dhaka?

From Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Qibla is about 277.6° measured clockwise from true north — roughly west-northwest. The exact angle changes slightly from place to place, which is why QiblaIO calculates it from your own location.

Why does the compass needle move or point the wrong way?

Phone compasses are affected by metal objects, phone cases with magnets, and nearby electronics. Move your phone in a figure-8 motion a few times to calibrate it, keep it away from metal, and hold it flat.

Does QiblaIO work without the live compass?

Yes. If your device has no compass sensor — for example on a desktop computer — QiblaIO still shows the exact Qibla angle for your location or for any city you pick, so you can line it up with a regular compass or a map.

Is my location shared or stored?

No. Your location is used only inside your browser to do the maths on this page. It is never sent to a server, stored, or shared.

Is QiblaIO free?

Yes. QiblaIO is completely free — no app to install, no account, no sign-up.
